Former Mining Engineer, moved into Health and Safety following colliery closure programme in 1990. Found it an easy transition from operational management positions under the prescriptive M&Q Act to H&S Practitioner under HASAWA in any other industry.
Have held several senior SH&E management positions in many industries, and still practicing, currently as QHSE Manager with Civil Engineering and Ground Maintenance Company idverde.
Involvement with Safety Groups started as a company member representative in 1990 of the then Strathclyde Health and Safety Group now known as SGWS, which he Chaired from 2001 to 2004 and again from 2013 to 2015 and when he tried to retire was offered the position of Life President. He also served as Secretary from 2004 to 2007. Remains on the Management Committee.
Was introduced to the National Health and Safety Groups Council, now known as SGUK around 2000 and served as Vice Chairman from 2005 until 2008. Re-elected to the Management Committee in June 2014, as awarded the Maurice Adamson Award in 2015 and elected to Chair in July 2017.
Gate-crashed a meeting of the Scottish Chamber of Safety in 2001, which along with its member groups now fall under the overarching SGUK umbrella, served as Chair from 2006 until 2011 and again from 2015 until present.
Served on the Board of IIRSM from 2005 and held the position of Deputy Chairman from 2008 until 2011.
Group Initiatives personally involved in over the years are:
Liaison with Reid Kerr college Construction Department and students, representing the group on SCOS and SGUK. Liaison with IIRSM on Annual Joint Meeting. Represent SCOS / SGUK on Group Management Committee
Derm Project; HRAW (created the partnership that created the product); Estates Excellence; Partnership for Health and Safety in Scotland (PHASS), incorporating the Scottish Plan for Action on Safety & Health (SPlASH), as part of the Helping GB Work Well Strategy; LOcHER Steering Group; NETREGS Business Advisory Group.
